## Early Beginnings in Emergency Services

At just **15 years old**, Claire C. Ward began her journey into the world of healthcare with the **Thousand Islands Emergency Rescue Service** (TIERS). Growing up, she had never encountered the role of a **respiratory therapist**, but it was a career that would soon capture her interest.

## The Growing Field of Respiratory Therapy

Currently studying at **SUNY Upstate Medical University**, Ward is focused on **respiratory therapy**, a field projected to grow **13%** annually through **2033**. Ward emphasizes the importance of this profession, especially highlighted during the **COVID-19 pandemic** when respiratory therapists were crucial in patient care. The profession is described as an **art and a science**, requiring continuous education and skill refinement.

## A Journey Fueled by Passion

Ward's journey into EMS began at TIERS, where she participated in the Junior EMT program throughout high school. This invaluable experience solidified her commitment to helping her community during emergencies. She completed her basic EMT training as a junior and advanced EMT training as a senior, realizing her passion for respiratory therapy after shadowing a professional at **Samaritan Medical Center**.

## Career Pathways and Opportunities

As she advances in her studies, Ward is aware of the diverse opportunities available as a respiratory therapist, including roles in **ICUs**, **emergency departments**, and outpatient care. She finds the work incredibly rewarding, especially when she witnesses patients' recovery and can communicate effectively with their families.

Ward plans to continue her career in New York after graduating in **2025**, with aspirations to work in pediatrics and neonatology, areas where she feels a strong calling.
