Northwest Iowa Community College closed its campus to welcome over 1,000 high school juniors from the region, offering them a unique opportunity to explore post-graduation possibilities.

More than 20 high schools transported their students to the college in Sheldon, Iowa, for the annual Junior Career Day. This event allowed students to connect with representatives from 40 colleges and universities, facilitating discussions about their educational and career futures.

Brenda Sandbulte, the Career Academy Coordinator at Northwest Iowa Community College, emphasized the event's value: "They’re seeing, not the end of their high school careers, but they realize that it’s not as far off as they originally thought. 'What am I going to do next? Is a four-year school the right school for me, or is a two-year school? Can I make a living off of an Associate’s Degree?' They can ask all of those questions at an event like this."

In addition to college discussions, students participated in over 40 interactive sessions led by professionals in diverse fields such as healthcare, veterinary sciences, the armed forces, law enforcement, and various trades.

Kelsey Peterson, a presenter at the event, encouraged exploration: "Even if you think you have an idea of what you want to do, you can use this time to branch out and look at things you may not be as interested in, or that you might have a little bit of interest in. You just never know where life is going to lead you."

The participating high schools hailed from six counties in Northwest Iowa, making this a significant regional initiative for career development.
