From Injury to Triumph: CJ Baxter's Inspiring Second Chance at Kentucky

A Second Chance

In a thrilling 35-34 overtime victory against No. 10 LSU, Kentucky football fans stormed the field, celebrating a 5-1 start under first-year head coach Will Stein. But for running back CJ Baxter, the moment was deeply personal—a testament to resilience and faith.

"It means a lot," Baxter said. "I told Coach Stein and Coach Sloan after the game, 'Thank y'all for giving me a second chance.'"

A Test of Faith

Baxter's journey has been anything but easy. Once a top high school prospect committed to Texas, injuries derailed his career, leaving him an afterthought. He entered the transfer portal, seeking a fresh start. That leap of faith led him to Lexington.

On his face tape, Baxter wore John 13:7: "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand." The verse resonated deeply. "I've been through so much," he said. "I got the game took away from me. When I went through my injuries, I didn't understand. It was hard. But I'm super thankful for this reset."

Unselfish Leadership

Through six games, Baxter has eight touchdowns, more than anyone on the team. Yet he deflects praise. "All the glory goes to God," he said. "My faith was tested, and He got me through. The Book of Job is something I love because that was me."

Even after scoring the overtime touchdown that set up the winning two-point conversion, Baxter didn't celebrate. "I'm like, 'We finna go for two, let's go win this game,'" he recalled. He credits his offensive line: "I'm nothing without those guys."

More Than a Game

For Baxter, the win wasn't about silencing doubters—it was about giving back. "The best part was giving it to the fans who deserved it and playing for my grandparents," he said. They attended their first game in person, providing a boost.

Saturday's victory was proof that with effort and faith, there's light at the end of the tunnel. "Life is 10% what happened to you and 90% how you respond to it," Baxter said. "That's literally us right now."
