Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada hosted its first-ever Trades Day on July 24, connecting young people ages 16 to 24 with career opportunities in skilled trades like welding, carpentry, and automotive.
Hands-On Exploration
The event featured hands-on stations where students used tools and simulators, and spoke directly with local employers about pay, training, and certification pathways. Goodwill staff offered resume assistance and connected students to programs leading to union jobs with benefits.
Why Trades?
Shanice Stevens, Director of Community Engagement, emphasized the goal: "A lot of students are not aware of what the trades look like. Now they can plan to go to trade school, get into a high-paying industry, and many organizations pay for their training."
Goodwill's Support
Michael Miller, Training Academy Manager, noted Goodwill's Career Centers provide training and funding assistance beyond just resume help, serving the entire community.
Student Perspective
Aydin Davis, a UNLV student, explored welding, masonry, and carpentry programs. He left more confident about pursuing welding, citing union benefits like great retirement plans and health care.
Future Plans
