A Hands-On Career Day Experience
On February 7, three seniors from the DECA program at Perrysburg High School organized an inspiring career day for junior high students as part of their senior project. Katherine Cromly, Hayley Griggs, and Gabby Petrie dedicated months to planning this event, which featured over 30 presenters from various career fields.
Diverse Presentations
The event included local businesses like Crumbl Cookies, where co-owner Danielle McDowell discussed the process of cookie-making and the various roles within her company. She provided students with icing packets to practice creating cookie designs themselves.
In another segment, students from Penta Career Center’s industrial automated systems program distributed circuitry kits, allowing junior high students to build their own circuit boards. Instructor Matthew Wegert highlighted the increasing importance of robotics in our daily lives, illustrating how technology is evolving, even in fast-food restaurants.
Interactive Learning Activities
The cafeteria buzzed with activity as nearly a dozen DECA students set up a “Finance 101” game that mimicked real-life financial decisions. Participants had to manage an income while navigating expenses like car loans and medical bills, learning valuable lessons in financial literacy.
Cromly, Griggs, and Petrie aimed to select presenters and activities that were both educational and relatable, steering clear of traditional lecture formats in favor of engaging, hands-on experiences. They believe this approach is more effective in inspiring students about future career opportunities.
Their project will be showcased at the DECA state competition in March, showcasing the hard work and creativity they put into this initiative.
