A recent survey by Indeed Flex has uncovered startling challenges facing recent college and university graduates. Based on responses from 1,195 graduates in the US and UK, the findings reveal a tightening entry-level labor market that is forcing a shift in career approaches.

  • 59% of graduates reported that securing a full-time entry-level role this year has been very challenging, with only 9% finding one easily.
  • The biggest hurdles cited include lack of experience (25%) and high competition (24%).
  • Concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) are prevalent, with 79% believing AI is reducing opportunities in their fields.

Shifting Job Preferences

Economic pressures are driving graduates to prioritize financial security over long-term career goals. Almost half (49%) are willing to accept any well-paying job, and 46% are considering temporary or flexible roles due to AI concerns. Current preferences include:

  • Remote or freelance roles (20%)
  • Temporary or seasonal work (17%)
  • Gig or contract-based jobs (13%)

The AI Skills Gap

Despite recognizing AI's impact, 54% of graduates have received no training in AI tools, highlighting a critical gap in workforce readiness. However, 22% are self-teaching to improve employability.
