Summary:

  • Elena Rybakina prioritizes health and calendar management over chasing the final Grand Slam needed for a career slam

  • The 27-year-old US Open champion emphasizes stability and balance to extend her professional longevity

  • Roland-Garros remains her biggest challenge, having never advanced past the quarterfinals at the tournament

  • Recent physical issues led to a strategic retreat in Cincinnati, highlighting her focus on recovery and treatments

  • Rybakina admits that while she feels young, lingering physical issues require careful management as she becomes world No. 1

Elena Rybakina, the newly crowned US Open champion, has made a pivotal decision regarding her future in tennis. While she stands just one major title away from achieving a career Grand Slam, her focus for 2027 and beyond shifts dramatically from chasing trophies to prioritizing health and strategic calendar management.

At 27 years old, Rybakina acknowledges that time is a factor. "The main priority... is try to keep myself healthy and definitely choose the calendar correctly," she stated after her victory in New York. This approach marks a departure from the relentless pursuit of every tournament, emphasizing instead stability and balance in her training and competitive schedule.

The Roland-Garros Puzzle

Roland-Garros remains the only Grand Slam where Rybakina has not reached a semifinal. Despite winning on clay in Stuttgart earlier this season, her history at the French Open has been inconsistent:

  • She reached the quarterfinals in 2021 and 2024.
  • She was eliminated in the second round this year by Yuliia Starodubtseva.

This surface has proven to be her most significant hurdle, making the completion of the career Grand Slam set a complex challenge rather than a guaranteed next step.

Health Over Hype

Rybakina’s commitment to physical well-being is not just theoretical. Just 23 days before winning the US Open, she retired from her Cincinnati quarterfinal match against Iga Swiatek due to physical issues. During that week, her routine shifted entirely to recovery:

"For seven days I was just going from my hotel room to the gym, three hours there spending, a lot of recovery, treatments."

She candidly shared, "I feel young, but my body, throughout the years, some things not going away completely. Some issues are staying."

As she begins her journey as the world No. 1 for the first time, Rybakina’s strategy is clear: manage her body carefully to ensure longevity in the sport, proving that career sustainability can be more valuable than any single trophy.
