The Starvation and Humanitarian Crisis Division
This role sits within GRC’s Starvation and Humanitarian Crisis Division, a globally recognized team leading efforts to prohibit, prevent, and seek accountability for mass starvation and related violations. With deep specialization in the crime of starvation under international law, the division conducts cutting-edge investigations and legal advocacy, often utilizing open-source intelligence (OSINT) in collaboration with key partners.
Their work involves collecting and analyzing complex, often sensitive data to support legal accountability and policy reform, particularly in conflict-affected regions such as the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
Role Overview: Junior OSINT Researcher
GRC is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior OSINT Researcher to join its international team. This short-term, remote role will focus on supporting open-source investigations related to starvation crimes and humanitarian crises, with a strong emphasis on legal accountability and data integrity.
Key Responsibilities
- Information Gathering: Assist in the collection and verification of open-source information for investigative purposes, aligned with international standards.
- Data Preservation: Ensure all OSINT material is archived and preserved in accordance with legal and technical best practices.
- Legal Research: Conduct legal research relevant to international humanitarian law (IHL) and international criminal law (ICL).
- Drafting & Reporting: Contribute to the preparation of project deliverables, including drafting sections of reports summarizing preliminary findings.
- Training Support: Assist in the development and preparation of training materials related to open-source investigations and legal frameworks.
- Project Assistance: Support overall implementation of project activities, helping to ensure timely and effective delivery of outputs.
Candidate Profile
Essential Qualifications & Skills
- Minimum 2 years of experience in open-source investigations, ideally within humanitarian or legal contexts.
- Proven ability to work independently and deliver outcomes with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated creativity and flexibility in dynamic and fast-paced environments.
- Strong practical thinking and problem-solving skills to support investigative strategies.
- Experience handling and securing sensitive or confidential material.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and Arabic.
Desirable Experience
- Professional or research experience related to the MENA region, particularly Syria.
- Familiarity with database and case management tools.
- Knowledge of or experience with data visualization tools.
- Advanced academic background in public international law, particularly IHL or ICL.
