The New York State Department of Civil Service has announced that the application period is now open for the entry-level law enforcement civil service exam. This exam is designed for qualified applicants seeking positions across New York in agencies such as the Department of Environmental Conservation, the Office of State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and the State University of New York.

Interested candidates can apply online at the official website until 11:59 p.m. EST on September 17, 2025. There is no cost to take the exam, as all state exam application fees are waived through December 2027. The exam itself is scheduled for November 2025 and will be a multiple-choice test.

Positions Available and Requirements
The exam will fill various roles, including:
- Environmental Conservation Police Officer Trainee 1 and Forest Ranger 1 at DEC
- Park Police Officer Trainee at Parks
- University Police Officer 1 at SUNY
Age requirements have been updated: candidates for Park Police and University Police cannot have passed their 43rd birthday on the exam date (increased from 35), while there is no maximum age for DEC roles. All candidates must meet additional qualifications outlined on the official webpage.
Language Proficiency and Hiring Estimates
The exam also targets bilingual candidates, with opportunities for those proficient in Spanish or Chinese to take language proficiency tests upon hire. The state estimates filling approximately 150 positions statewide over the next year.
