The Grim Reality of Entry-Level Job Hunting
Young Aussies are facing a tough job market, with hundreds applying for the same entry-level positions. A recent graduate shared their frustration after seeing 919 applications for a Level 1 Helpdesk Technician role in Perth, paying between $50,000 and $65,000 a year.
The Trap of Promised Opportunities
'I fell into this trap,' the graduate said, reflecting on the advice that IT was a booming industry in Australia. Despite completing a TAFE IT Advanced Diploma and engaging in self-study and networking, landing an entry-level job feels 'almost impossible.'
Why So Many Applications?
Recruiters shed light on the overwhelming number of applicants:
- 50% are from overseas or visa-limited applicants seeking sponsorship.
- 20% are from other states without relocation plans.
- 15% apply just to meet Centrelink requirements.
- Only a tiny fraction are suitable and responsive.
A Wider Issue
This isn't just an Australian problem. A woman in New Zealand shared a TikTok video showing jobs with up to 830 applicants. She applied across various sectors but faced stiff competition everywhere.
The Burnout of Job Searching
LinkedIn research reveals that 60% of Australians miss out on relevant roles due to outdated job search tools and unclear job titles. Nearly half feel burnt out from the endless search.
The Current Job Market
The unemployment rate hit 4.3% in June, the highest since November 2021. Full-time jobs decreased by 38,000, while part-time roles increased by 40,000, indicating a shift in working hours.
'Today’s job search can feel limited by rigid filters and predefined boxes,' said LinkedIn’s Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand, Matt Tindale.
